Twin Birch is available in the US & Canada, with plans for future expansion.

Materials

We currently use organic cotton and hemp, which are more readily available. Additional fabrics and blends will be introduced in the future.

Organic Cotton

For our products with cotton, we only use organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic chemicals and synthetic pesticides or genetically modified seeds. This is not only healthier for the environment and farmers, but also for our customers.

Organic cotton makes up less than 2% of global cotton fiber production. According to the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), 56% of the world's cotton is purely rainfed and doesn't require irrigation. Our goal is to get fabric from farming practices that don't rely on outdated and wasteful irrigation systems, but rather efficient and or measured drip-feeding systems. We don't want to contribute to a stressed water cycle and permanently reduce water table levels. More long term, using recycled organic cotton via a closed loop system is a goal of ours.

Hemp

Another textile we use is Hemp. Hemp fabric is a type of textile that is made using fibers from the stalks of the Cannabis sativa plant.

The production of Hemp requires less land than cotton, and it also releases less toxic substances into the soil and the wider ecosystem. Hemp is also considered to be a carbon negative raw material, which means that it absorbs more carbon than it produces. This means harsh chemical herbicides aren't necessary. It also returns 60-70% of the nutrients it takes from the soil.

Dye Process

We use vegetable dye as well as low impact dye.

Supply Chain

We are working with one of the pioneers in the hemp textile industry. The US accounted for an estimated 1.7% of global organic cotton in 2020/21, while 0.2% of the country's overall cotton production was estimated to be organic The lack of cotton and hemp mills in the US has caused us to look elsewhere. China has the best full processing of industrial textile hemp currently.

Our manufacturer is in Northeast US, and our vegetable dye house is 30 miles from that facility. We also plan to use other low impact dyes in the future. Our undyed Tote bags our manufactured in New Hampshire, with organic cotton sourced from Texas.
